SHR was founded in 1991 as an apllied timber research institute. Already in the first years, fundamental research was done on chemical and thermical wood modification. At the end of the last century a pilot plant was established to scale up the process of acetylation towards industrial production. Other fields of expertise are wood decay (identification, pest control) by degrading insects (ecology), fungi (decay processes), bacteria (microscopic pattern and processes of decay), timber species (identification (CITES, EUTR, CoC) properties), constructions, wood chemical interactions.
Nowadays SHR has a modern wood laboratory with test, modification, analyses and research facilities on 1200 m². With 23 employees, SHR is doing tests for timber certification and product development, advices on sustainable timber uses (constructions, design, timber species, WPC, engineered wood, coatings and glue interactions) and inspection for damage-inventarisation and -control, advice (maintenance, reparation, restoration, conservation).
